A great hoodie is one of the most rebought, most underbought items in modern wardrobes. Most people own ten mediocre ones instead of two great ones. Here's how to spot the difference before you check out.
1. Pinch the fabric. A true heavyweight hoodie feels dense between two fingers — like a piece of fabric, not a piece of paper. If it crumples like printer paper, it's not the one. 400+ gsm is the line.
2. Check the hood. A good hood holds its shape when it's off your head. A bad hood lays flat like a bib. Look for hood lining, drawstrings that don't unravel, and reinforced eyelets.
3. Look at the cuffs. Cheap ribbing stretches out and never goes back. Quality ribbing snaps back when you tug. Ribbed cuffs and hem are non-negotiable.
4. Inspect the seams. Flat-felled or double-needle seams along the shoulder, sleeve, and hem are the difference between a hoodie that lasts five years and one that pills and twists after five washes.
5. Wear it for an hour. A hoodie that feels great in a fitting room can feel completely different ninety minutes in. The collar shouldn't ride up. The sleeves shouldn't shorten. The body shouldn't pull when you raise your arms.
A great hoodie isn't a fashion item. It's infrastructure. Buy it like you mean it.
